This is the day that smokers are encouraged to quit smoking just for one day.  I could be the start of a new life for you.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I come from a house of smokers.  My mom, dad, sister and two brothers all smoked from the time they were teens.  And except for one brother, they all quit, some more permanently than others, nevertheless they were able to stop smoking at least for a period of time.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have to say I am very proud of the victories my family has had over cigarettes.  They all quit cold-turkey, mostly because there &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;were no&lt;/span&gt;t as many aids or support systems in place when they quit as there are today.  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;After Dad died, we found a small black notebook in he used as a day-planner.  In it we noticed a number printed in red at the top of each page.  We could not figure out what it was until finally we came across a page that mentioned a number that corresponded with the number in red.  It was the number of days he’d been without a cigarette.  He never told anyone, just went about the business of quitting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dad made this decision after he’d recovered from having a mass removed from his throat.  The doctor had been sure it was cancer, but it turned out to be benign.  We were all so relieved. Dad had said before the surgery “If it’s cancer, I’m not gonna keep on smoking because it won't matter anyway.  If it’s &lt;strong&gt;not&lt;/strong&gt; cancer, than I’m gonna quit”.  So, without making any big deal about it, Dad kept the promise he’d made to himself and quit smoking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wish I could end this story more cheerfully.  Dad did enjoy many more smoke-free years, at least 20.  But in 2003 another mass was found in his esophagus.  This cancer was much larger and found much later.  It was so large anything Dad ate had to fit through the size of a small soda straw, mostly soups and other liquids.  It was painful and frustrating.  No one would choose to die this way.  Did it begin years ago when Dad was still smoking?  We'll never know for sure.  But I am sure that quitting gave him many years of easier breathing and better health than he would've had if he'd kept smoking.  And it gave us many more years to enjoy him, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if you are a smoker, how about giving it a try? You know, just take the day off from smoking.   It’ll be a gift to those who love you, but most of all, it will be your gift to yourself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you’re not a smoker, why not pledge to help someone quit? Thanks so much Yvonne!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;10 Ways Not to Encourage Cancer Patients&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Point out they shouldn’t be scared, angry or depressed, because they are Christians and that would ruin their testimony.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Suggest they have cancer because of the stress in their lives. You may not be a doctor, but you just know.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remind them that lack of forgiveness causes cancer, and they need to forgive somebody.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Explain they probably got cancer because they didn’t eat right, and from now on they need to take responsibility for what they eat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make sure you tell them about your aunt, cousin, grandma, friend or neighbor who had cancer and died.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mention the horror stories you’ve heard about chemotherapy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don’t forget to inform them about the friend you know whose skin burned because of radiation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Visit them as soon as they return from the hospital and keep talking to them even when their eyes are at half-mast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tell them to call you if they need anything. They smelled like the sheets in a cheap hotel room; pungent bleach mixed with sanitizer. The chemotherapy treatment was done when the last drop of poison dripped into long tubing connected to the intrusive catheter in my chest. The second hand on the clocked ticked towards 1:00 pm. After four hours, the morning treatment was complete. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 113px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525700464304808226" border="0" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9vM-nbpInRI/TK87S74ZYSI/AAAAAAAAALs/QPcRFEftubw/s200/Cindy+Scinto+hospital+pic.jpg" /&gt;But the evening treatment would begin at 5:00 pm. Right when I started feeling like I might survive, the next bottle of rusty colored medicine would hang and begin dripping for hours of infiltration into my blood stream.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“It’s like pouring gasoline into your veins,” Dr. Nogle stated after a nurse rushed to rinse her hands at the sink. A few drops of chemo had splattered on top of her left hand and immediately singed her skin, leaving red blisters behind. I witnessed the burn. That’s going into my veins. How can they do this? Isn’t it burning me up inside?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Four months prior, I survived a dangerous heart transplant resulting from countless heart attacks, 30 angioplasties, an experimental thoracotomy, double bypass, open heart surgery, and dying twice in the ER. All this occurred like an ambush on my health in less than three years with no plausible reason for heart disease. The donor heart I received came a day after Dr. Nogle told me there was no hope. But this heart only became available because no other surgeon wanted to risk transplanting it. It needed extensive repair and came with a viral type cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The cancer manifested four months later and after conventional chemo failed, a stronger, more lethal one had to be used. The doctors in my home town hospital exclaimed how that hadn’t used it in 20 years and it took that patient a year to recover from three weeks of treatment. I would have to endure 60 days of two treatments a day, seven days a week in an isolation room at the hospital. When I was released, a regimen of six months, everyday of the week, with home nursing care continued.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I lost most of my hair. Early on I prayed, “Lord, please don’t let me lose all my hair and be a pudgy Italian with a turban.” He extended grace to me. &gt;smile&lt;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;But I survived and recovered well. I kept my sense of humor and my hair grew back as curly and thick as it was before. Today, I do everything I can to avoid a recurrence. The virus that brought on this cancerous malignancy is permanent. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;I am grateful for Cec’s book, When Someone You Love Has Cancer. I wish the people around me had read it when I was in need of care. He writes about the absolute needs instead of the perceived needs people conjure up. It’s like tradition to make meals or send flowers. When those gifts arrive for someone and their family suffering with cancer, their hearts sigh with disappointment. Read Cec’s book. "DES (Diethylstilbestrol) is a synthetic form of estrogen that was prescribed between 1938 and 1971 to help women with certain complications of pregnancy. DES has been linked to clear cell adenocarcinoma, an uncommon cancer of the vagina or cervix, in daughters of women who used DES during pregnancy."*&lt;br /&gt;I've been tested somewhat extensively since the 80's and so far nothing has turned up. But it is important for all women to know about their risks, what the signs are and what can help prevent these cancers specific to our gender.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Gynecologic Cancer is cancer of the female reproductive system, which includes cervical cancer, endometrial/uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer and peritoneal cancer. In the last two decades, considerable gains have been made in the detection and treatment of these cancers. &lt;em&gt;T&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;hanks to our guest blogger Donna Smythe Teti, for today's moving post.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;“The Lord is close to the broken hearted and those crushed in spirit he saves.”&lt;br /&gt;34:19 the New American Bible&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mourning Coffee&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Hi Donna, let’s meet at the park for coffee.” My twin sister Sue called over the phone. “I will pick up some coffee along the way.” Or “Hey Sue, do you want to meet at the bookstore and grab a coffee?” I’d call and ask her after we put our kids on their school buses at opposite ends of the same town.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We spent many a morning with a coffee in hand and some great conversation. We fell over each other’s words as we chatted about our kids, husbands, our faith and how to solve all the world problems. We gave each other piece of mind, comfort and encouragement as we worried about all the things moms worry about.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But suddenly at the age of forty my dear twin sister had a massive stroke. In three days she was gone. With great pain and great faith I let her go.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My faith carried me for a while but as the days passed naturally I missed my sister more and more. I missed our daily conversations and the comfort and insight that she gave me on life. Without her words of wisdom my faith began to waiver. I think faith is easy until one has to really believe in it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Each morning after the kids went to school I sat in my family room, drank my coffee and “talked” to my sister in Heaven. I told her how much I missed her and how scared I was. “How am I going to get through this grief Suzy?” I shouted out loud one morning to her as I sipped from a steaming hot cup of coffee. It was then I felt a message touch my heart. Jesus is here too. Sue seemed to say.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wow! In my grief and anger towards God I had forgotten that! So I poured a fresh cup of coffee, sat down in my family room and thought about Jesus. I shut my eyes and tried to picture Him there in my home chatting with me over coffee…just as Sue and I had done so many times. What would I say? What would He say?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I offer to you whose hearts are broken, the poem I wrote about that visit with Jesus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Warmest Blessings,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Donna Teti &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:georgia;"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Having Coffee with Jesus&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Each morning as I awake&lt;br /&gt;Sadness floods my heart again&lt;br /&gt;So I pour a cup of coffee and pray&lt;br /&gt;My heart will start to mend&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On this particular morning&lt;br /&gt;As my grief began to soar&lt;br /&gt;I went to get the paper&lt;br /&gt;And found Jesus at my door&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As He entered through the doorway&lt;br /&gt;Sunlight covered every wall&lt;br /&gt;When He smiled and looked me in the eyes&lt;br /&gt;He stirred my very soul&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He thought that I could use a friend&lt;br /&gt;Who knew sorrow and knew pain&lt;br /&gt;He saw that I was grieving&lt;br /&gt;And that is why He came&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus knew that I was hurting&lt;br /&gt;And feeling life was quite unfair&lt;br /&gt;And He knew I spent each morning&lt;br /&gt;With good coffee and good prayer&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus wanted me to know&lt;br /&gt;In that early morning hour&lt;br /&gt;He was there to share with me&lt;br /&gt;His gentle healing power&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He felt that it was important for me&lt;br /&gt;To see Him face to face&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes we need to be engulfed&lt;br /&gt;In a strong and warm embrace&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As He wrapped His hug around me&lt;br /&gt;His love through me did flow&lt;br /&gt;Then He asked to sit with me awhile&lt;br /&gt;And have a cup of Joe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;em&gt;As I poured His cup of coffee&lt;br /&gt;I had so much on my mind&lt;br /&gt;Yet He knew what I was thinking&lt;br /&gt;And He answered, she is fine&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He told me she is here with me&lt;br /&gt;Each morning while in prayer&lt;br /&gt;She continues to love and care for me&lt;br /&gt;Each day throughout the year&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He tried to answer questions&lt;br /&gt;Though the mysteries could not be told&lt;br /&gt;But He asked that I just trust in Him&lt;br /&gt;For someday they would unfold&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As we sat and drank our coffee&lt;br /&gt;I stared on in disbelief&lt;br /&gt;That Jesus would actually come to me&lt;br /&gt;And help me through this grief&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus said He enjoys these mornings&lt;br /&gt;When I sit with Him and pray&lt;br /&gt;Even though I can not see Him&lt;br /&gt;He too is with me every day&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As Jesus drank His coffee&lt;br /&gt;I spoke of sorrow, loss and pain&lt;br /&gt;He did not speak but His Presence there&lt;br /&gt;Was healing just the same&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He understood my emotions&lt;br /&gt;As He wiped my tears away&lt;br /&gt;He confirmed with a sympathetic smile&lt;br /&gt;These feelings were OK&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I said I feared my broken heart&lt;br /&gt;Would never heal completely&lt;br /&gt;Because the loss I felt inside&lt;br /&gt;Was in my soul so deeply&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus agreed the pain would subside&lt;br /&gt;But never quite go away&lt;br /&gt;So He would surround that pain with love&lt;br /&gt;As I met with Him each day&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He said that when He walked the Earth&lt;br /&gt;He turned to His Father in prayer&lt;br /&gt;It got Him through each moment&lt;br /&gt;When His life seemed quite unfair&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He encouraged me with compassion&lt;br /&gt;To look for joy between the tears&lt;br /&gt;There are many Blessings in my life&lt;br /&gt;That will make for happy years&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus eyes lit up as He reminded me&lt;br /&gt;Our lives will go well beyond&lt;br /&gt;As He described the joy in Heaven&lt;br /&gt;When all heartache will be gone&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus said that He would carry me&lt;br /&gt;Through this aching and this loss&lt;br /&gt;As His Father in Heaven had done for Him&lt;br /&gt;The day He met His cross&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He said this is why it is such a gift&lt;br /&gt;Just talking with Him each day&lt;br /&gt;It enables Him to comfort me&lt;br /&gt;As I sit with Him and pray&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When Jesus left my house that morning&lt;br /&gt;I knew His Spirit was still there&lt;br /&gt;So I refilled my cup of coffee&lt;br /&gt;And continued on in prayer&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Copyright © 2006 by Donna Teti&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Donna Teti has been published in both Guideposts Magazine and Cecil Murphey’s Christmas Miracles. My mom once tried to light our oven after she'd left the gas on too long. A few minutes later I heard a commotion in the kitchen and the acrid smell of smoke came drifting into the bedroom. Walking into the kitchen I could see mom sitting on the back porch steps. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Mom", I said, "Something's burning!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"It's me," she replied, "I just burned off my eyebrows!" &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At that point we both started laughing. Of course Mom wasn't badly hurt, just her pride, but I share this story to introduce a link to an article I read last week and wanted to share in this space.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This link is to an article that doesn't have a lot of new information. I was down in Texas taking care of him back then. In the months preceding his death, a tumor in his esophagus left him unable to swallow anything that could not fit through a straw. This made eating quite a challenge. If that wasn’t bad enough, Dad also suffered from dementia (possibly from cancer in his brain) so he really didn’t understand or remember that he had to be very careful about what he ate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consequently, anytime we were eating together we'd eat only liquids or something super soft that could fit down his obstructed esophagus. His favorite, his “comfort food”, was Milk Toast, which if you’re not an "old timer" from Texas you may think that is just a term used to describe a wimp. Milk Toast is hot milk poured over buttery toast, and really not too bad, but it's not getting featured on the Food Channel anytime soon, either. Most of the time it was the Jell-O and soup which was fine for both of us.  Plus it was a good reminder to me of what Dad was going through, of how much he'd lost to not be able to even eat normally.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9vM-nbpInRI/S_LAnbT8adI/AAAAAAAAAIc/ti0v4qovVTE/s1600/whataburger.jpg"&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472648280787413458" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 122px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 106px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9vM-nbpInRI/S_LAnbT8adI/AAAAAAAAAIc/ti0v4qovVTE/s320/whataburger.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Occasionally though, I'd get really hungry for some "chewable" food and sneak off to get a "Whataburger". The first time I did it, I sat in the restaurant and ate. When I walked into the house an hour later Dad asked me where the hamburgers were. He could smell them from my clothes and figured I brought take-out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After that, whenever I would get the burger buzz, I'd use the drive-thru, park a block or so away from home and eat in the car.  After I finished, I'd bury the trash outside under what was already in the can and leave the car windows open to make sure there was no burger aroma to give me away.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was one of those sad/funny/guilt inducing things that you do when someone you love has cancer and you're the primary caregiver. As I sat in the car back then, I'd feel silly and guilty, with my heart aching because of Dad's illness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The worst was probably dealing with the dementia. Dad couldn't remember why he couldn't eat or what the problem was. It was a constant struggle, but we were blessed with a strong and loving relationship of trust in each other and God got us through that oh, so difficult time. As hard as it was, it was also one of the greatest blessing of my life to be able to give back to my father just a fraction of the loving care he'd always given to me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today my dad is in heaven, healed, and eating heavenly hamburgers every day I suspect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'd like to ask you a favor. How about you?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;At a recent trip to my wonderful doctor (who is just about my age 59) I mentioned that I'd been having some trouble swallowing and frequent heartburn and indigestion. I also shared that my father had died of esophagus cancer in 2004 and I was concerned that I might be at risk for that particular cancer. I asked about an exam I had read about to scope out the condition of my esophagus. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;To my surprise, Dr. A told me he had some of the same symptoms I was describing and in addition to taking a look at my esophagus, he thought it would be good to take a look at the colon as well. Turns out, that he just recently gone in for same test and had a colonoscopy, too, "As long as you're "out" anyway." &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;(Incidentally, Dr A also mentioned that was one test he'd been avoiding, too, but was glad he'd finally gotten it done).&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;So, my doctor called and my appointment is for March 9, @ 1:45 PM. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;How about making a call and get your own appointment scheduled today?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Scared of the unknown? Even though the doctor reminded her that she was in the high-risk category, she didn't seem upset. She had breast cancer and it had already spread into the lymph nodes. He informed her that after surgery, she would have six weekly chemo injections.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Shirley is one of those individuals who has never been physically strong and has suffered from many illnesses. This seemed to be one more burden for her to overcome, but she didn't complain or feel sorry for herself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The doctor sent home a video and several helpful pieces of literature to prepare us for the surgery and for the chemo treatments.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A few days before her surgery, I walked along in a nearby park. I love my wife, even though many times I felt I had expressed it inadequately. The thought of losing my life-partner burdened me and I hardly knew how to deal with it. No matter what happened, I wanted her to have some sense of how deeply I felt. In our years together we've had many problems and struggles—like other couples—but our relationship had always been the one stable thing in my life. God had given me a loving, committed wife. I'm a better Christian today because of her.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I walked that day, I decided that I wanted to give her a gift—something beyond words and something beyond what was prized one day and laid away and forgotten a month later. It had to be a special gift. As I prayed, nothing came to me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A few days before the surgery, we watched the video. It warned us that some marriages break up when a woman undergoes a mastectomy. Some men see their wives as disfigured, disgusting, and unappealing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A few wives spoke openly about feeling unattractive and ugly. Especially, the women spoke about their hair. As I learned then, most women lose all bodily hair during chemo treatments. The women spoke about their hair coming out in the shower in huge hunks. Some told of their tears, even though they knew the hair would grow again after the treatments stopped.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I loved Shirley's thick mane. When we married, it was that beautiful shade of red they call titian. By her mid-thirties, the graying had taken away the titian and her color became what they call champagne. I thought it was beautiful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After we watched the video, I had an idea. I knew the gift I could give her. "You'll probably go bald," I said. "At least that's what the video depicted."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before I could say anything more, Shirley said she'd either buy a wig or wear a turban. She didn't seem distressed. That felt a bit strange because I was more upset over the loss of her hair than she was.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I have an idea," I said. "It's something I'd like to do for you. When you lose your hair, how about if I shave my head?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The suggestion took her by surprise and she stared at me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"We can go around as two old baldies," I said quickly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;She continued to stare at me for several seconds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a full head of hair. It had been dark brown and the white had streaked through it. My hair has a loose curl but I'd always kept it cut short. My mother once said that when I was quite young natural ringlets formed across my forehead.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I didn't say it to Shirley, but I thought, this could be my gift to you. It will show you that I'm with you in your lowest time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I have a better idea," she said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We sat across from each other and she reached over and stroked my face. "I've always liked your curls but you cut them too short to show."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"It's easier to take care of that way," I said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Here's what I'd like. I'd like you to let your hair grow. Let me enjoy looking at your curls."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;She wanted to look at my curls? I didn't mind men having long hair, but I couldn't conceive of my hair being long.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I'd like to look at your curls during the weeks of chemo. I'll also tell you when to get it cut."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"All right," I said. I reached over, hugged her, and held her a long time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is my gift to you, I thought. Each day as you look at me, you can see my love for you. "So you'll tell me when to cut it?" I asked.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;She smiled and assured me she would do that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Shirley's surgery took place in September 1999. By the second chemo treatment, she had lost every follicle of hair. Most of the time she wore wigs given to her by friends. Occasionally, she wore only a turban. It didn't matter to me. She was still the woman I loved—with or without hair. And, as the doctor predicted, after the chemo ended, her hair grew back again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My hair? A decade later it's still long and curly. When it gets long, the curls on top form ringlets as they did in childhood. Every few weeks, Shirley will say, "It's time to get it cut again."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've gotten used to the long hair. A decade ago I combed it after my shower and didn't bother with it again the rest of the day. It's different now. When I think about my hair, I smile and remind myself, this is my gift to Shirley. This is my gift that lasts. I grabbed her and held her tightly for several seconds. When I released her, she didn't cry. The unshed tears glistened, but that was all. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I felt emotionally paralyzed and helpless, and I couldn't understand my reaction. After all, I was a professional. As a former pastor and volunteer hospital chaplain I had been around many cancer patients. I'd seen people at their lowest and most vulnerable. As a writing instructor, I helped one woman write her cancer-survival book. Shirley and I had been caregivers for Shirley's older sister for months before she died of colon cancer. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All of that happened before cancer became personal to me—before my wife learned she needed a mastectomy. To make it worse, Shirley was in the high-risk category because most of her blood relatives had died of some form of cancer. I found dozens of accounts, usually by women, about their battle and survival. I pushed aside the novels that ended in a person's death. A few books contained medical or technical information. Not only am I grateful, but I remember my pain and confusion during those days.
